เปิดม่านแล้ว Bangkok International Film Festival 2008 หรือ งานเทศกาลภาพยนตร์นานาชาติกรุงเทพฯ ครั้งที่ 6 มีไปจนถึง 30 กันยายน ด้วยภาพยนตร์กว่า 80 เรื่อง มีให้เลือกให้ชมกันสมกับที่รอคอยกันมา สำหรับในปีนี้ก็มีภาพยนตร์นอกกระแสที่ไม่น่าพลาดชม 12 เรื่องคือ

Kurus is a coming of age story about a 15 year old boy, Ali, who has to come to terms with growing up with a single father (Namron), and a nosey neighbor (Mislina Mustapha) seemingly eyeing for Budis affection. With the arrival of a new teacher, Miss Liew (Carmen Soo), Ali finds himself developing a crush on her. Ali and his best friend Hassan spend the day fishing, getting bullied by the male-female team of Eli and Iqa, and experiencing the awkwardness of being a teenager.
Directors Note
Kurus is a simple movie about growing up. I wrote the film using myself, and some friends as the basis of the characters. The movie was originally made for Malaysian television, so we wanted a story that was poignant and relevant for Malaysians, and also accessible. I had a crush on my secondary school teacher when I was 16 or 17 (who hasnt), and back then things were always innocent and exciting. I guess the film is a sort of fantasy for me, because in real life my pretty teacher never noticed me! I remember moments where I cycled to my favorite fishing ponds and spent the evenings fishing and hanging out with my friends. I also remember moments of following a girl I liked who took the same public bus as me. These memories are what made Kurus special for me.

Young Rita lives an almost interesting life. Her mother works at the weather bureau, while her father, an overseas worker, disappears when his ship is mysteriously lost on its way home. Named after a famous American screen icon whom her late, former actress grandmother once adored, Rita also lives in one of Manilas oldest districts with her entrepreneurial aunt.
Years later, an adolescent Tata seems to be the same small girl who is enamoured with television. When shes not tending to her aunts stall of pirated movies, shes living and breathing the weekly programs.
Beneath all semblance of normalcy is the story of a girl whose mother is trying to win her affection, whose boyfriend is sexually-frustrated, and whose dad is becoming more and more of a distant memory.
Elsewhere, there floats footages from the only film done by a once-famous movie star in the 60s, Luna Valencia.
Production Note
The early establishment and long history of Philippine cinema, the strong influence of a memorable golden age of movies in the 1960s, as well as the overlapping of movies and television in the new mass media makes for a new generation of film admirers.
For many, it is the life of the stars: illustrious but short-lived. Yet it is also about lasting imaginings of childhood memory, better life, and success. These conflicting characteristics define the aspirations of a people who have been claimed by the lights of cinema. Like before a movies main act, childhood is also about the drama of the mundane. Characters ready themselves for the culmination of their cinematic experiences. Everyone is preparing themselves for the movie of their lives. While this film is about the movies, it is also essentially about growing up. As much as I am mapping my childhood experiences in documentary style, this film is also about everyones efforts to make sense of their own pasts. Similar to the experience of looking through ones own photo album, the search is a fragmented but essential process that makes way for present meaning. And in this new generation of Filipinos, raised by soap operas, genre films, and celebrity endorsements, we as stars of this countrys national movie find ourselves alienated from the need to connect with our own personal histories.

เม อาศัยอยู่กับพ่อแม่และน้องสาวน้องชายในหมู่บ้านที่ยากจนตอนกลางของเวียตนาม แม่ทำงานหนักเพื่อหาเลี้ยงลูก พ่อเอาแต่หาความสุขสำราญนอกบ้าน ชีวิตที่ยากจนขมขื่นทำให้เมฝันที่จะหาเงินมาช่วยครอบครัว และมีหวังเมื่อคนรู้จักกับที่บ้านพาเธอไปเข้าหลักสูตรที่อ้างว่าสอนอาชีพช่างตัดเสื้อในไซงอน เพื่อนๆ และน้องสาวพากันยินดีกับเมที่จะได้มีทางไปสู่วิถีชีวิตที่ดีขึ้น ไม่มีใครสงสัยเลยว่าเมถูกขายซ่อง ถูกเฆี่ยนตีและทรมานทุกวัน ความฝันของเมเป็นเงาดำมืดเมื่อเธอรู้ความจริงว่าเธอไม่มีทางหนีกลับบ้าน และในที่สุดเธอต้องเป็นโสเภณี ส่วนทางบ้าน น้องสาวของเมก็กำลังจะเดินทางสู่เมืองหลวง มาเข้าหลักสูตรช่างตัดเสื้อเช่นเดียวกัน
ผมได้อ่านเรื่องนี้จากหนังสือพิมพ์ สะเทือนใจกับความโชคร้ายของเด็กหญิงคนนี้ เด็กหลายพันคนจากหมู่บ้านมาหางานหาเงินในเมืองหลวงไปเลี้ยงครอบครัวโดยไม่คำนึงถึงความยากลำบากและอันตรายต่างๆ ผมเคยไปที่แบบนี้มาหลายครั้งแล้วแต่ไม่ได้เห็นอะไรเปลี่ยนแปลงไปในทางที่ดี คนก็ยังอยู่กันอย่างยากจน ผู้ชายที่ยังหนุ่มและแข็งแรงต้องออกจากบ้านเกิดไปทำงานหาเงินในที่ไม่คุ้นเคย ในขณะที่คนแก่และเด็กอยู่บ้านดูแลตัวเองกันไป คนที่บ้านก็คงไม่รู้หรือไม่อยากจะรู้ว่าอะไรจะเกิดขึ้น

SITA (25), a karaoke bar hostess moves in a small attic room in a house cum studio belonging to JOHAN (50), a Chinese-Indonesian traveling photographer.Sita also moonlights as a prostitute. One day, she is gang raped by a group of drunken customers and is badly beaten up and Johan saves her. Sita decides that she can no longer return to her life as a bar hostess and offers to be Johan's servant because she cannot pay the rent.
Sita finds out that Johan has only a few months to live and eventually helps him to fulfill three wishes which are represented in three photographs. One, a photo of the sea which is his wish to travel on a ship and visit China; the second, a photo of railway tracks which represents his yearning to travel by train and the third is a photo of an empty chair beside an old camera which is his quest to find a successor.One day, Johan is enraged because Sita discovers his grim past and drives her away. Weeks pass and one evening a very ill Johan asks her to take a photograph of him. As she is about to take the photo, Johan dies. Sita pretends that Johan is still alive and using the timer she takes a final photo of her smiling into the camera with Johan sitting beside her.

Years When I Was a Child Outside openly describes the childhood of the filmmaker and his father who also had children outside their family. The frankness is cloaked by a series of interpretations and poetic reflections. This poetic, complex, yet also very sensitive and personal film, is both a diary and an essay. The film is mainly about the relationship between the film maker and his father. That father, Rodolfo Torres, was a successful author and seller of self-help books, whose publishing empire collapsed at a certain point. After this disaster for the family, it also emerges that the father has another complete family with wife and children alongside his own family.
Directors Biography
John TORRES (1975, Manila) is currently one of the most promising young Filippino film makers. In 2006 Torres work got special attention in Rotterdam in the short film programme Filipino Super Heroes in which four of his shorts were shown. His feature d?but Todo todo teros won several prizes at international festivals, among which the prestigious Dragons & Tigers Award at the film festival of Vancouver (2006).
